HISTORY OF THE ECHOPARK SPEEDWAY 

Opened in 1960, EchoPark Speedway has grown into one of the most recognisable venues on the NASCAR calendar. Built on former farmland just south of Atlanta, the 1.5-mile oval quickly established a reputation for fast racing and close competition, earning strong support from fans from its earliest years.

A defining moment in the track’s history came in 1997, when the facility underwent a major redesign. The traditional oval was converted into a quad-oval configuration, significantly increasing corner speeds and changing the rhythm of racing. As part of this redevelopment, the frontstretch and backstretch were also swapped, creating the distinctive layout that defines the speedway today.

Across the decades, the circuit has played host to some of NASCAR’s most iconic moments. Dale Earnhardt’s dramatic photo-finish victory in 2000 remains one of the closest finishes in series history, while Kevin Harvick’s first Cup Series win later that same season – achieved just weeks after Earnhardt’s death – stands as one of the most emotional chapters in the sport.

Another major transformation arrived in 2021. The track surface was fully repaved, and the banking increased to 28 degrees, fundamentally altering how races unfold. While retaining its intermediate length, the changes introduced superspeedway-style pack racing, producing tighter fields, frequent lead changes, and a more unpredictable racing style that challenged teams and drivers alike.

Today, the speedway is far more than a NASCAR venue. In addition to hosting top-level stock car racing, it welcomes Legends events, driving experiences, concerts, and a wide range of fan activities throughout the year. Combining Southern hospitality with high-speed action, EchoPark Speedway continues to evolve, maintaining its status as one of the most dynamic and influential tracks in American motorsport.
